Quality is a word heard at, and about, the company all the time. On the commercial side of the business, which consists of approximately 40 percent of the custom volume, Galaxy does a lot of work with Japanese corporations. They really understand what quality is, Mr. Negrin explains.
Doing quality work also requires effort and Galaxy's 20 employees (10 installers) are well trained for the task. "I believe everyone should be able to do anything," explains Mr. Negrin. "We spend a lot of time on training, primarily in-house training, having senior people train the newer ones," he states.
Another aspect of quality and professionalism is the promotional material which the company produces. Well designed full-color brochures picture previous jobs the company has done to show potential clients what is possible. Capabilities are detailed so that clients, whether owners or designers, know what the company can provide. Galaxy has also produced a promotion piece which carries its Custom Detailing Services (beveling and edgework, shapes, bending, custom contouring, colors, lacquered glass, brass/stainless steel, etc.) on one side and a Specifier's Guide for carving applications on the other.
Galaxy started in 1977 with 3,500 square feet. (An overwhelming amount of space Mr. Negrin says it seemed at the time.) Space was added gradually until the company was housed in a 9,000 square foot area in Pine Brook, N.J. When this space became tight, the company knew it had to move to get more, and as its lease was up and the landlord wanted a higher rent, it seemed time to find a new location. The current site in Fairfield, which the owner had had his eye on for some time because of its retail potential on busy Route 46, became available, and the company moved in the summer of 1991 into its current 20,000 square feet facility.
